A WORD ON AWARDS
When we began our studio, we would do anything (well, almost) for some publicity, just to let the world know that were here. When we opened, some of our “business” oriented friends told us it would take 4-5 years to become established. We were featured in some newspaper articles, ect. since websites( and not even cell phones) were a thing then. A few years in operation, we were asked if we wanted to be in a real, hard-back book. We were thrilled. But it cost $1,500 (not exactly sure) . Being delighted and honored, we agreed to do this (along with about 350-400 other artists as it turned out!) So, it was not really so much an honor to us (well maybe being asked to participate was an honor in itself?). It turned out to be just another “paid for advertistment” albeit, it was a beautiful book. We did get some good tear sheets from it that we could add as filler to our brochure, back when we had one. However, we did participate in this 3-4 times before we figured this out! (you see, I was in pre-med, never took a business or marketing class!). And, we also got two jobs, nice ones, so it pays make wise decisions !! Then, for a number of years, authors, writing REAL magazine articles and books, asked if they could include us in their publication, all we had to send were some good photos, no money required! Now, for us, that was an honor . . for someone to think enough of our work that they would include it in a permanent publication, nice. And, publications that we did not have to pay for! More nicer! (I know that is gramatically incorrect but it just sounds too perfect not to use it here). Some AWARDS were the same - you had to pay to be considered for the award! Now, if I ever get a letter from a certain committee in Stockholm or from one with Pulitzer as a return address . . . ! I don’t think they have a stained glass category though, but they could start one, yes?
However, we consider that each time a client creates a short-list of potential artists for a project and we are included on that list, it is a “pre-award” for us. Normally, clients invite the shortisted studios to make in-person presentations. If, after interviewing all the studios, we are the studio fortunate enough to be selected, we consider that asan AWARD. If the reader can follow that logic, then we have received over 500 awards!
